If you're among the millions of Americans who've lost a tooth due to decay or an accident, consider dental implants. Before the development of dental implants, dentures were the only alternative to replace missing teeth. But implants offer a permanent solution that looks and feel like your natural teeth. At C & R Dental Care, the team of dentists has offered implants since 2004 to residents of Centreville, Virginia, and Columbia, Maryland. If you have a missing tooth, or teeth, call one of the three offices or use the online booking tool to find out if implants are an option for you.

Dental Implants Q & A

What are implants?

Implants are synthetic structures placed into the jaw bone to replace the tooth root. They act as a foundation for an artificial tooth – a crown – or a permanent bridge. In some cases, implants can also attach a full row of dentures.

Implants are so well-designed, they mimic the look and feel of natural teeth. Implants are usually made of a synthetic, yet biocompatible material, like metal or ceramic.

What are the benefits of implants?

Unlike dentures that can slip and change fit, implants become part of your mouth. Their benefits include:

  • Natural look and improved self-esteem
  • Optimal function for speech and chewing
  • Convenience, as you treat them just like your natural teeth
  • No need to remove them nightly and do special cleaning
  • Durability

Who is a candidate for implants?

Because implants require surgery, you must be healthy enough to tolerate sedation and resist infection. You must have healthy gums, meaning no periodontal disease, and enough bone to hold the implant. Implants require good oral hygiene habits and a commitment to regular dental visits. The team at C & R Dental Care can examine your oral health and overall well-being to determine if implants are right for you.

What is the process of getting an implant?

An implant requires several visits. At the first visit, the doctor implants the metal post into your jaw bone. You then wait 6-12 weeks for the bone to grow around the implant. At the next visit, they attach a connector post and the prosthetic tooth – or teeth. The prosthetics are made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth.

Does it hurt to get dental implants?

Most people who receive dental implants tolerate the procedure well. Anesthesia is administered during the procedure, so you feel nothing during the surgery. Post-surgery, you may have a little soreness that’s easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications. If you suffer greater pain, the doctors can prescribe a small dose of prescription pain medications. They may also provide you with antibiotics to stave off infection.

Do dental implants require special care?

Dental implants deserve the same care as your natural teeth. Brush at least twice daily and floss. Twice yearly professional cleanings at C & R Dental Care help extend the life of your implant and your remaining natural teeth.
